Padstow in Cornwall

padstowThere is a small town in Cornwall that is famous and well-known for one thing. People travel from all over the world to visit it, purely on the strength of this one thing. It’s been doing this thing for centuries, and not to attract visitors, but simply to get by. The village is Padstow, and if you know anything about Padstow, you’ll know that the thing it’s famous for is seafood.

The old village section of the town is beautifully picturesque, and is exactly what you’d expect of a small, Cornish fishing village, all the way from the boats moored in the water to the lovely little fishing cottages. Outside this section, the town has expanded, taking on a different feel due to the influx of new residents and businesses that wish to make use of the resources and image that Padstow has available to it, It’s all very upmarket though, and so still possesses its own charm and style.

The fact that Padstow is renowned for its seafood and access to fresh fish means that there are plenty of businesses set up here to either make use of that, or help that. Rick Stein, a popular British celebrity chef has set up a restaurant there, specialising entirely on, you’ve probably already guessed it, seafood. There is also the National Lobster Hatchery, which was set up so that new lobsters could be hatched and raised there, then released into the wild, in an effort to replace those that were caught through trawling or lobster pots. This effort to replenish the stocks that Padstow has relied upon for centuries, if not millennia, is a fairly recent development.

Padstow isn’t isolated from other places in Cornwall, and so a trip there can easily last just for a day as part of any holiday to Cornwall. Because of this, there are many holiday makers who do visit for the day, wandering around the streets. There has been criticism that this is spoiling the town, ruining its image, and that really Padstow should be known for being a tourist hotspot rather than its seafood, but most people still maintain that it’s a beautiful area to visit, regardless of how many other people there are there.
