Onrust Island
Once sailed two or three islands exceeded, That is a saying that could be said when visiting the island of Onrust. Because in addition Onrust Island, within minutes of reach by boat, we will be able to reach the Angel Island and Island Cipir. Thus while visiting Onrust, to visit two other islands nearby if you do not want to lose.
Slowly our ship docked at the island of Onrust, one group of islands in the Thousand Islands. From a distance looks a few old buildings that are old and damaged. Pier that is not too clean, if you do not want to say dirty welcome the tourists. We were rushing around Onrust who allegedly said during the Dutch colonial period is one of the busiest places as the VOC ship port of call center (Verenidge Oost Indische Compagnie).
Although a quick look a mess, but the cleanliness of the island seems very very concerned, and expressed as a protected historic island.
This island is easily accessible by sea transport, can through Kamal Muara, Muara Angke and Marina Ancol beach with a distance of approximately 14 kilometers can be taken for twenty minutes. Onrust itself according to the Dutch language means “without a break” or busy, or in English Unrest. The locals called Ship Island, at age 17-18 Because this island is very busy stop off at the East India Company ships. In addition Onrust Island as a place of repair and shipbuilding, which was indeed very busy this island at the time.
Onrust Museum is the only building left standing intact. In this museum meticulously recorded the various developments of this island from time to time. Brief history: between the years 1803-1810 Onrust island battered by 3 time British, and finally in 1810 the British fleet led by Admiral Edward Pellow destroying infrastructure Onrust Island. In the year 1848 began Onrust Island and the surrounding re-enabled by the Dutch into the Navy base. In the early days of independence, Onrust Island used as a quarantine hospital for people with infectious diseases under the supervision of the Ministry of Health of Indonesia until the beginning of 1960. Then from 1960 until 1965 used to shelter homeless people and beggars as well as military training. In 1968 there massive looting on the island of Onrust, so that the historic buildings, ruins lives alone. In addition to the museum building is intact, several other buildings that lived foundations is a pilgrimage barracks, disease quarantine barracks and barracks of soldiers. There are also graves of Dutch soldiers who died here, and the graves of indigenous prisoners.
There are no facilities on this island, such as lodging, places to play, there are only a few food stalls that are less regular population, which is a bit disturbing the beauty of this island. Visiting the island is a historical tour, because this island is less revealing her face as a tourist island. At least with a visit to the island of Onrust, we can share one long journey Indonesia’s history.
