Adventure the Wilderness of Southeast Alaska
In prior centuries Southeast Alaska drew in fur traders and later gold prospectors. The still pristine region is now the home of the state capital, Juneau, a mecca for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The city has a small-town vibe but is still host to some of the nicest Southeast Alaska hotels, perfect places to rest after a day exploring the outdoors or enjoying local culture.
It’s hard to find a still pristine wilderness in today’s world. Alaska is one of the most sparsely populated places in the world and is one of the few places where it’s still possible to experience the fullness of nature’s beauty. The Southeast Alaska panhandle is a perfect spot for a healthy outdoor vacation. Right outside of Juneau sits the Mendenhall Glacier, part of the Juneau Icefield, a mass of 38 connected glaciers that covers more than 1,500 square miles. There are hiking and mountain biking trails into the rugged mountains nearby. The weather is surprisingly mild for Alaska. The city is only reachable by ferry or airplane, giving it the perfect setting for an outdoor vacation. It’s also probably the best place to stay in Southeast Alaska; hotels abound due to an excellent tourist infrastructure.
One of the most popular tours from Juneau is a helicopter tour to Mendenhall glacier. Choppers fly over the glacier, giving visitors a chance to try and comprehend the massive size of the frozen river. They land on the glacier, which provides an unforgettable chance to see a world of ice comprised of ridges, valleys, lakes, and crevasses. For those on a cheaper budget other tours go straight to the observation deck that provides beautiful views and photo opportunities. More independent explorers may opt for a hike on one of the trails that provide unique perspectives on the ice or the nearby mountains.
Other expeditions take tourists to the waters nearby. It’s possible to go kayaking, whale watching, and even fishing during the summer salmon season. There are humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, and salmon nearby.
The city is an incredibly hospitable place. There are local pubs to sit down in and discuss future explorations with fishermen over a local beer. After that, it’s easy to retire to one of those Southeast Alaska hotels before another adventure.
